World Cup Simulations - lot of penalties and differences between platforms
5 years 10 months ago - 5 years 10 months ago #139733
by Gosen
It s supposed to be a tidbit and I don t know if someone tried it before, but inspired by last news about a guy, who made 1000 simulations of WC 2018 in FM, I tried something on the smaller scale with SWOS with few differences and unfortunately restrictions imposed by the game itself.
World Cup 1994 was simulated on 96/97 squads with default teams, while Brazil 2014 is on 16/17 squad with also default settings. For Russia 2018 I decided to use all teams, excluding those from 4th in their groups changing only Germany with Serbia, so the results are more based on simulating from playoff stage rather than entire tournament. Still I felt obligated to do this, since we re in the middle of this World Cup and squads from the previous season are close to the current one. Also fact that it s impossible (or I just don t know how?) to set third place playoff on DIY, I had to use old format for all tournaments. Top scorers are decided by the first on the list, except editions, when four or more players score the same number of goals.
Before putting the results, one more thing. I was raised by PC edition, so I guess I m in minority, since most started from Amiga and probably prefer it more. That s why I made a compromise and simulated World Cups in both versions and that was probably the most interesting thing about whole thing. It actually showed huge difference in randomness, which you can check yourself below:

Wow, that s some statistical research, much respect for it. For an easier overview, could you add a summery above the table (most WC winners PC / Amiga, most likely top scorer etc...)?

I would add more statistics, but don t know how to count words in cells if it appears in text (not just alone), so I guess I would have to make another cell for 3rd places... For now:
Best scorers in old days were definitely Bobic and Bergkamp, while on new squads there are three dominators: Lukaku, Mario Gomez and Kevin Gameiro.
Goal record for PC is Lukaku (10) and only once, when someone scored more than 9 goal on PC, while Amiga s record is Alfonso Perez (13) with few times over 9 goals scorers, but only up to 11.
Longest streak are Holland and Brazil on PC (4 times in a now in 96/97). On Amiga there there s only one long 3 streak run for France (16/17 Brazil).
Only one time Asian team gets to the semi final and strangely it s Saudi Arabia from 96/97.
African teams were pretty strong, especially on Amiga, especially Ghana, which won one time and get to the final few times (as well as few time runner-up Senegal).
PC is absolutely dominated by Brazil, but strangely in Russia they don t perform so well anymore and Spain on PC is destroying everyone.
We can risk saying that 16/17 squads are not so far away from actual WC in Russia on Amiga (except Germany), since England, Croatia and Belgium are doing pretty well (despite only one title, France is also doing fine, but in real life they are young team, so one year can give huge progress). For 2014 we have very strong Ghana and Costa Rica (twice in third place playoff!).
WC in USA was crazy in real life, but 3 champions for Russia, 2 for Ireland and 1 for Norway are huge surprises nevertheless.
I think that few teams, that I haven t included since 24 teams limit could have changed few things (especially Belgium in 2014 and Poland in 2018, since even Switzerland won three times!).
Fixed brackets probably are huge factor, so I guess DIY with seeded groups and more random brackets would also change final results significantly (if I only knew how to do third place playoff!).

Yea, quite an expected outcome. Interesting to see Italy v Brazil stats on PC v Amiga!
